We in the West find it hard to imagine a culture which holds no family or societal values, and yet this is very much the case in Mongolia. Here, generations have grown up with little or no parenting, meaning they lack communication skills and any sense of self–worth. That’s why the Life Skills project sends teachers into schools to run a curriculum based on values and character. We met children whose worldviews had been changed by the project, and heard rave reviews from parents, teachers and school managers alike.
In Nalaikh, the team have been given two rooms in a new government building, and their lessons have become a core part of the curriculum for every school in the town. The classes also run in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, and various other locations, and there are calls to expand the work into new regions.
Every visit to a school is a chance to show the love of God, and each year hundreds of children sign up for follow–up Bible clubs. We met one boy who heard of Christ through our partners’ work, and now walks the long distance to church alone each week, even in the freezing winter. He said it’s his heart’s response to being saved by Jesus!
