No Church to Return To

When war scattered his community, Kui found a new one to serve.

Kui hails from the western part of Myanmar and successfully graduated from ministry training last year. However, constant conflict between the military junta and resistance groups has caused many of the region’s communities to become displaced. Communities who once lived together have scattered in different directions as families fled to safer regions, seeking protection wherever refuge could be found.

When Kui graduated, there was no community for him to return to. The small church no longer exists and all that remains are empty homes. Soldiers have ransacked the houses, taking whatever they want and burning a number of buildings to the ground. When Kui contacted relatives who had fled to a southern region, where conditions are relatively safer, he found that they were struggling to survive, renting small homes in the city and working hard to earn a meagre living. Returning to the area was not an option.

As a result, he was sent out to serve in an urban area. Here, he pastors a small church among a slum community who live with very limited resources and struggle daily for survival. Amid such hardship, he finds great joy in proclaiming the good news of salvation. Many people are so concerned for their physical survival that spiritual matters receive little attention, but the Lord continues to open small doors for ministry. Kui reaches out to young people and children on weekends through games and Bible study groups. In the evenings, he visits the homes of the elderly to talk and build relationships. Each Sunday, a group of adults gather together to discuss God, human sin, and the salvation on offer in Jesus Christ.

Pray for Kui as his continues to minister in this urban area among impoverished people.
