Excitement is building as Easter approaches. For many, the thought of school holidays, chocolate eggs and cute bunnies sums up what Easter means to them.

Most Asian countries, however, will not be celebrating Easter in this (or any) way. Over 2 billion people in Asia will spend the next week hopelessly oblivious to the fact that Jesus died on the cross for them.  As we enter Passion Week and think about the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus, it’s a great opportunity to take a fresh look at the wonderful and dynamic message of the cross.

Neon cross Easter

Our partners are committed to sharing this amazing message in Asia. Individuals, families and communities are finding hope as they embrace the life-changing message that echoes from the cross.

Over the next 7 days leading up to Easter, we will be looking at the words spoken by Jesus from that cross. The Bible records 7 statements that Jesus made between the hours of 9am and 3pm on what we call Good Friday. Some of the statements are prayers to His Father, some address those standing nearby, and one is directed at a thief hanging alongside Him.

Several of the words that Jesus spoke that day are unsettling for us as they capture the anguish of His suffering on our behalf. But collectively these 7 sayings proclaim the victory of the cross over sin and herald hope to a world of despair.

As our staff travel throughout Asia and spend time with partners we see and hear them share this message. Whether it takes the form of village evangelism, pastor training, Bible distribution, feeding centres, literacy programmes or medical clinics, our partners are energised by the good news of the cross… and they are seeing great encouragements as God continues to build His church in Asia!

More Easter devotions (these will be published daily over the course of the week)
